Bus Carrying Seasonal Workers Plunges Into Canal
At least four people have died and 16 others have been injured, four of them critically, after a bus carrying seasonal workers plunged into a canal in southern France.
The accident happened at around 5:30am on Tuesday morning in Aimargues, a small town in the Gard region. The bus was carrying 20 people, all of whom were seasonal workers from Poland.
According to eyewitnesses, the bus was traveling at high speed when it failed to negotiate a bend in the road and plunged into the canal.
Rescue workers used boats and inflatable rafts to reach the bus, which was submerged in about 2 meters of water.
The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, where four of them are in a critical condition.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
The French government has expressed its condolences to the victims' families and has promised to provide all necessary assistance.
A local resident who witnessed the accident said: "I heard a loud bang and then I saw the bus in the canal. It was a terrible sight."
Another witness said: "The bus was going very fast. It looked like it was out of control."
The accident is the deadliest road accident in France since 2015, when a bus carrying schoolchildren crashed in the Alps, killing 43 people.
