McLaren prioritizes Norris over Piastri in title race
McLaren team boss Andreas Seidl has confirmed that Lando Norris is the team's priority for the 2023 Formula 1 title, despite the arrival of highly-rated rookie Oscar Piastri
Piastri, the reigning Formula 2 champion, has joined McLaren for 2023 after a protracted legal battle with Alpine over his services.
However, Seidl has made it clear that Norris, who has been with McLaren since 2019, is the team's number one driver.
"Lando is our priority," Seidl said. "He is a proven race winner and has shown that he has the potential to be a world champion."
Piastri will have to earn his place
Seidl admitted that Piastri is a "very talented driver" but said that he will have to earn his place in the team.
"Oscar is a rookie, and he will need time to adjust to Formula 1," Seidl said. "We will give him all the support he needs, but he will have to prove himself on track."
Piastri has said that he is "excited" to join McLaren and is "ready to learn from Lando." He added that he is "confident" that he can challenge Norris for the team's number one driver position in the future.
Norris has a point to prove in 2023
Norris has a point to prove in 2023 after a disappointing 2022 season.
The Briton finished seventh in the drivers' championship, behind teammate Daniel Ricciardo.
Norris will be hoping to challenge for race wins and the championship in 2023.
He will have a new teammate in Piastri, who is widely regarded as one of the most promising young drivers in the world.
It will be interesting to see how the two drivers perform alongside each other in 2023.
