Willie ORee's Number Retired

Anson Carter Participates in Ceremony

Former Boston Bruins player Willie ORee was honored with a banner-raising ceremony on March 28, 2023, at TD Garden before the Bruins' game against the New York Islanders.

Carter, who is now the Bruins' director of player development, helped carry the banner alongside ORee's son, Mike. ORee's number, 22, was officially retired by the Bruins on January 18, 2022, making him the first black player to have his number retired by an NHL team.

ORee played for the Bruins for two seasons, from 1957 to 1959, and is widely recognized as breaking the NHL's color barrier.

Unused Bruins Jersey Numbers

In addition to ORee's number, there are 13 other numbers that have not yet been worn by any player in Bruins history. These numbers are: 66, 69, 78, 84, 85, 87, 93, 95, 96, 97, 98, and 99.

While some of these numbers have been retired by other teams, the Bruins have not yet officially retired any of them. However, it is unlikely that any of these numbers will be worn by a Bruins player in the near future.

Of the 99 possible jersey numbers, only 16 have not been worn by a Bruins player in a regular season game. These numbers are: 66, 69, 78, 80, 82, 84, 85, 87, 90, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, and 99.
